52 Relatives in 2018 #28 Margaret Toothaker (1682-1695?)

Margaret Toothaker

relationship:  2nd cousin 9x removed

This one is difficult to comprehend the emotional, physical, and psychological toll this girl had to endure in her lifetime.

Margaret grew up in a household with a father who was frequently missing for long periods of time, requiring the town to provide for them.  On 18 May 1692 her father was charged and arrested for witchcraft.  On 28 May 1692 Margaret (aged 9) and her mother Mary Allin Toothaker and aunt Martha Allin Carrier were arrested for witchcraft.  On 16 Jun 1692 her father dies in prison of “natural causes”.   Margaret was the only arrested child who had both parents accused of witchcraft.  In Jan 1693 Margaret’s mother was found not guilty of witchcraft and released.  It is assumed Margaret was released at the same time but no records confirm this.

When they returned home, they find that it has been burned by Indians.  On 5 Aug 1695 their homestead is again attacked.  Mary, her mother, is killed.  Margaret is captured/kidnapped and never seen again.

birth:  31 Jan 1682 in Billerica, Massachusetts

parents: Roger Toothaker (1634-1692) and Mary Allin(1644-1695)

captured by indians: 5 Aug 1695 and never seen again.
