Elizabeth Dane Johnson

relationship: 1st cousin 10x removed

Elizabeth Dane Johnson was one of many of my female relatives arrested for witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trial time period.  Elizabeth Johnson was arrested on 30 August 1692.  One daughter Abigail, aged 10, was arrested at the same time.  2 other children were arrested as well.  It is unknown when her release occurred.  She was eventually pardoned.

“Before the two married, they were convicted of fornication before marriage and fined. These types of actions were not easily forgotten during these Puritan times and Elizabeth was long afterward thought of as a “scarlet woman.”” from ‘Witches of Massachusetts’ website.

Relatives Accused – Salem Witch Trials

The following is an attempt to document my relatives accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trial time period.  It’s interesting to me that few adult men in my family were arrested.  Links are to the brief biographies I’ve completed so far.

Edmund Ingalls appears to be the common ancestor of this first group of people.  He was not accused.  Edmund Ingalls is my 10x great-Grandfather.

  • Elizabeth Ingalls, Edmund’s daughter, was married to Francis Dane.  He was accused but never arrested.
    • Abigail Dane Faulkner – their daughter, accused and arrested
    • Elizabeth Dane Johnson – their daughter, accused and arrested
      • Elizabeth Johnson – her daughter, accused and sentenced to death, not executed.
      • Abigail Johnson – her daughter, accused and arrested
      • Stephen Johnson – her son, accused and arrested
    • Deliverance Hazeltine Dane– their daughter-in-law, accused and arrested.
    • Male servant – accused and arrested
  • Faith Ingalls, Edmund’s daughter, was married to Andrew Allen.  neither accused
    • Mary Allen Toothaker – their daughter, accused and arrested as was her husband Roger Toothaker.  Roger died in prison.
    • Martha Allen Carrier – accused and hanged
      • Thomas Carrier – accused and arrested
      • Andrew Carrier – accused and arrested
      • Richard Carrier – accused and arrested
      • Sarah Carrier – accused and arrested

The following do not appear to be directly related to the above relatives.  Mary Ayer Parker’s sister Sarah married the above Abigail Faulkner Lamson’s husband’s grandfather.  A connection but not a direct relationship.

Like her mother Abigail Dane Faulkner and  sister Dorothy Faulkner Nurse, Abigail was accused and arrested for witchcraft during the summer of 1692.  She was 9 years old at the time of her arrest on 16 September 1692.  She was eventually released and pardoned many years after the fact.  She was “persuaded” to testify against her mother.

Dorothy Faulkner was released from prison in October 1692 after relatives Nathaniel Dane and John Osgood posted bail for her and several other child relatives.

Abigail Dane Faulkner

relationship: Her 1st cousin 10x removed

Continuing on the theme of the Salem Witch Trials, Abigail was accused of witchcraft and arrested on 11 August 1692 and questioned by many, including John Hathorne (also a cousin of mine).   Several of Abigail’s relatives were arrested, including her 9 and 12 year old daughters Abigail and Dorothy.  Abigail was found guilty but her execution was delayed due to pregnancy.  Abigail was released from prison in December 1692 and fully exonerated in 1711.
